How we began
We are Elsen and Michelle Portugal. After many years in ministry, both in the US and in Germany, in 2010 we learned how God has used and can use the arts (music and much more) to communicate His message, and help communities to express their worship in an authentic manner.
Ethnodoxology
Music and other artistic fields are not "universal" in the sense that they communicate the same message (or mood) to each and every community. Thus, it is important to know the community and their arts, just as it is important to know the spoken language of a people, in order to communicate the correct message in artistic fashion.

Our Work
Ethnodoxology work involves primarily training of cross-cultural workers by helping them encourage the use of local community arts for the Kingdom of God.

- Introduction to Ethnodoxology course in MG
- Contacts and organization of courses for 2019 in seminaries
- Planning for ABF (APR) and Intro do Ethnodoxology in Manaus in 2019
- Video production on Ethnodoxology through JMN in Rio de Janeiro

- Writing of book in Portuguese: Introduction to Ethnodoxology
- Translation of around 20 articles for publication in Portuguese
- Publication of article about the Xerente in a Brazilian academic journal
- Seminar on Ethnodoxology at the Baptist Seminary in Rio de Janeiro: March 22-23
- 2 other potential seminars in other RJ seminaries

O Que é Etnodoxologia? (What is Ethnodoxology?)
Etnodoxologia é "o estudo teológico e prático de como e porque os povos das culturas diversas louvam e glorificam o Deus verdadeiro e vivo como Ele é revelado na Bíblia". (Dave Hall)
Etnodoxologia é o estudo teológico e antropológico, com sua aplicação prática, de como cada comunidade cultural pode utilizar as suas expressões artísticas específicas e diversas de forma apropriada para adorar o Deus da Bíblia. (Paul Neeley)

O termo "Etnodoxologia" foi introduzido por Dave Hall, fundador de Worship from the Nations (Adoração Proveniente das Nações), um ministério de Pioneers, a partir do seu artigo "The Centrality of Worship" (A Centralidade da Adoração).¹ Dr. Roberta King define também o termo no Evangelical Dictionary of World Missions.² O termo tem como base a Etnomusicologia, mas envolve todas e quaisquer expressões artísticas (Etnoartes) utilizadas para louvor, adoração, e comunicação de verdades bíblicas, Esta aplicação das artes para a comunicação de verdades bíblicas, tanto dirigida a Deus diretamente como ao homem com o propósito de fazer e instruir discípulos, tem crescido muito nos campos missionários. Na medida que instituições missionárias têm observado a riqueza e o potencial desta abordagem, muitas vêm tornando a Etnodoxologia uma parte integral do processo de alcance missionário.
